A board does not make games faster

Start here, because it is where most overspending begins. Two boards supporting the same processor and memory will not produce meaningfully different frame rates.

What a board decides is what you can plug in, how much you can expand, and what you can upgrade to later. Those are real, but they are not performance.

Power delivery matters at the top of the range and rarely below it

Voltage regulation quality determines whether a board can sustain a high-power processor under load without throttling.

With a mid-range processor, mainstream boards are comfortably adequate. With a high-power flagship, it becomes a genuine specification. Match the board tier to the processor tier rather than buying the best board available.

Count your M.2 slots before anything else

This is the most common regret. Boards vary considerably in how many M.2 storage slots they provide, and in which PCI Express generation each slot runs at.

Some slots also share bandwidth with other connectors, meaning populating one disables another. That detail sits in the manual, not on the retail listing, and it is worth reading before buying.

Rear connectivity is what you live with

Count the USB ports and check their specifications. Per the USB-IF specifications, port naming has changed repeatedly and a port’s shape does not tell you its speed.

Check whether networking is wired only or includes wireless, and confirm the wired speed. These are the things you interact with daily, and they cannot be upgraded as easily as anything inside the case.

What you are usually paying extra for

Heatsink styling, lighting, additional fan headers beyond what you will use, onboard diagnostic displays, and overclocking features most buyers never touch.

None of these is useless. They are simply where the price difference lives, and it is worth knowing that before concluding the expensive board is faster.

A sensible allocation

For a mid-range gaming build, the board is usually the component to economise on relative to graphics card, processor and storage.

Buy the connectivity you need, the CPU support you need, enough M.2 slots for your plans, and stop there.
