GPU buying logic: VRAM, tiers and what actually ages badly

The card that ages badly is rarely the slow one. It is the fast one that ran out of memory.

Most GPU advice is a ranked list, which is useless a year later. The logic behind the list lasts longer.

Start from the target, not the budget

A GPU is not fast or slow in the abstract. It is sufficient or insufficient for a resolution and a frame rate.

So the first step is defining the target: 1080p at 144fps, 1440p at 144fps, 4K at 60fps. That single decision eliminates most of the market, and it is more useful than any benchmark chart because it is about you.

The common error is buying the most powerful card affordable, then pairing it with a display that cannot use it — or the reverse, buying a high-refresh 1440p display and a card that cannot feed it.

VRAM: the specification that decides ageing

This is the part worth understanding properly, because it is where cards fail early.

Compute performance determines how fast frames are produced. VRAM determines whether the card can hold what the game needs at your settings — chiefly textures and resolution-dependent buffers.

The two are independent. A card can have enough compute and not enough memory. When that happens the symptom is not a lower average frame rate. It is stutter, texture pop-in, and sudden frame-time spikes as data is shuffled in and out.

That is why “it still gets 70fps average” can coexist with a game that feels bad. Average frame rate hides the problem; frame-time consistency shows it.

Practical implication: VRAM requirements rise with resolution and texture settings, and they rise over time as games get bigger. A card with generous memory for its tier ages more gracefully than a faster card with less.

The tier trap

Manufacturer tier names are marketing, and they move between generations. A mid-tier number in one generation may sit where a lower tier sat previously.

Judge a card by what it does at your target, not by where its name sits in a naming scheme.

What the benchmark charts do not show

Three things worth knowing before trusting a comparison:

Averages hide stutter. A card with a higher average and worse 1% lows will feel worse. If a review only publishes averages, it is not telling you how the game feels.

Test settings may not be yours. Benchmarks often run maximum settings. If you play at high rather than ultra, the ordering can change.

Upscaling changes the comparison. Modern rendering frequently involves upscaling, and different cards implement it differently. A comparison at native resolution may not reflect how you will actually play.

Buying in Australia

GPU pricing here moves with exchange rates and local supply, and overseas price-to-performance comparisons transfer poorly. A card that is excellent value in one market can be poor value here on the same day.

EOFY in late June is historically a meaningful window for computing hardware locally, and the November period is the other. If your purchase is planned rather than urgent, those are the two windows worth targeting.

Consumer guarantees under the Australian Consumer Law apply, with acceptable quality judged against price — an expensive card is held to a higher durability expectation than a cheap one, and the claim is against the retailer.

A sequence that works

  1. Define the target — resolution and frame rate.
  2. Check your display actually supports it.
  3. Shortlist cards that clear the target with headroom, not exactly.
  4. Prefer more VRAM within the same tier, because that is what ages.
  5. Check your power supply before committing.
  6. Then compare local prices, in a discount window if you can wait.
