Modern install sizes make 500GB a false economy and 4TB an expensive habit.
The label capacity is not the usable capacity
Drives are advertised in decimal gigabytes and reported by the operating system in binary. A 1TB drive presents as roughly 931GB before anything is installed.
Then the operating system, paging file and update cache take their share. Planning against the number on the box is how people end up full within months.
Install sizes are the variable that changed
Large modern titles routinely occupy substantial multiples of what equivalent games needed a few years ago, driven mainly by uncompressed audio and high-resolution textures.
The practical consequence is that a 500GB drive now holds a small number of current large games plus an operating system. It is not a storage tier for a gaming machine any more; it is a boot drive.
A sensible default and how to adjust it
For most people building now, 1TB is the floor and 2TB is the comfortable answer.
Adjust upward if you keep a large library installed rather than rotating, play several large live-service titles simultaneously, or capture video. Adjust downward only if you are genuinely disciplined about uninstalling, and accept that you will be managing it.
NVMe or SATA, and where it actually matters
NVMe drives connect over PCIe and offer far higher sequential throughput than SATA, which is limited by its interface ceiling.
For game loading the difference is real but smaller than the raw numbers suggest, because loading is not purely sequential. For a boot drive and for titles using modern streaming techniques, NVMe is the right default — and at current pricing there is rarely a reason to choose SATA for a new build.
Two drives beats one, if the budget allows
A smaller fast drive for the operating system and current games, plus a larger drive for the rest, is a better arrangement than one large drive of middling speed.
It also means a reinstall does not touch your library, which saves a great deal of downloading.
Buy from somewhere you can return it
Counterfeit and mislabelled drives exist, and the failure mode is a drive that reports the right capacity and fails under sustained write.
Under Australian Consumer Law a faulty drive is the retailer’s problem. That guarantee is worth considerably more than the small saving on an anonymous marketplace listing.
