HDR in gaming: what actually matters and what is a sticker

Supporting HDR and doing HDR well are completely different claims, and only one of them is on most boxes.

“Supports HDR” and “does HDR well” are entirely different claims, and only the first one appears on most boxes. The gap between them is where money is wasted.

What HDR is supposed to deliver

Higher dynamic range: brighter highlights and darker darks in the same image, with more detail preserved at both ends. Done properly it is one of the more visible improvements available — a sunlit scene with detail in the shadows rather than a bright blur and a black hole.

Done poorly it looks washed out, or simply identical to standard range with the brightness raised.

Why it so often looks bad

Three requirements, and a display can fail any of them while still claiming HDR support:

Peak brightness. Highlights need to actually get bright. A panel that cannot exceed its normal brightness has nothing to give.

Black level and local dimming. Highlights only look bright next to genuine darkness. An LCD without local dimming raises the whole backlight, so the dark areas rise with the bright ones and the effect collapses.

Colour volume. The panel needs to hold colour accuracy at those brightness extremes.

A display can accept an HDR signal and satisfy none of these. That is what “HDR support” frequently means.

What the VESA tiers actually guarantee

VESA operates the DisplayHDR certification programme, with a separate DisplayHDR True Black specification introduced for emissive displays such as OLED. All tiers require support for the HDR10 format.

Two useful reference points:

  • Entry tiers do not require local dimming, which is why an entry certification typically delivers a modest effect on an LCD.
  • DisplayHDR True Black 1400, the highest True Black tier, requires at least 1400 cd/m² peak luminance while maintaining black levels as low as 0.0005 cd/m².

The practical reading: a certification tier tells you the panel met defined requirements. An uncertified “HDR ready” claim tells you it accepts the signal. Only the first is information.

The two technologies, and their different strengths

OLED and its variants deliver per-pixel emission, so black is genuinely black and local contrast is effectively unlimited. This is why True Black tiers exist as a separate specification — the old LCD-oriented criteria did not describe what these panels do.

Mini-LED LCD delivers higher sustained brightness across large areas and carries no burn-in consideration, at the cost of blooming around bright objects on dark backgrounds.

Neither is universally better. OLED excels in dark-room contrast; mini-LED excels in bright rooms and sustained full-screen brightness.

When HDR is worth paying for

  • You play in a dark or dim room, where contrast is most visible.
  • You play visually rich single-player games that implement HDR properly.
  • You are buying a panel in a tier where good HDR comes along with other things you want, rather than paying a premium for HDR alone.

When it is not

  • You play mostly competitive titles at low settings for visibility. Many players disable HDR because it makes targets harder to read.
  • You play in a bright room, where the contrast advantage is largely washed out.
  • The panel is entry-certified or uncertified. You are paying for a sticker.
  • Your games do not implement it well. HDR implementation quality varies enormously between titles, and a poor implementation on a good panel still looks poor.

Checking an Australian listing

Certification tiers are global, but the certification stated in overseas marketing for a model name is not automatically what the Australian listing carries. Panel revisions and regional variants exist.

Verify the specific tier on the specific listing you are buying, rather than assuming from a review of the same model name published elsewhere.

What we have not measured

We have not measured peak luminance, black level, colour volume or local dimming behaviour on any panel. That needs a colorimeter, controlled conditions and the display in hand.

Panel measurement is genuinely beyond our current capability, which is why our display guidance aggregates named third-party laboratories with attribution rather than claiming numbers of our own.
