Drift is a wear failure, not a mystery
A drifting stick reports movement when you are not touching it. In most mainstream controllers the analogue sticks are potentiometer-based: a wiper moves across a resistive track, and that track wears.
As it wears, the resting reading stops being reliably zero. The controller is not confused — it is reporting what the worn component tells it. This is a predictable consequence of the design, which is why it appears across brands rather than being a defect unique to one.
Check the cheap explanations first
Before concluding the hardware has failed, rule out the trivial causes. Contamination around the stick base is common and sometimes resolves with careful cleaning.
Most platforms also expose a deadzone or calibration setting. Increasing a deadzone masks mild drift at the cost of a less responsive stick centre. It is a workaround, not a repair, and it is worth knowing it exists before spending money.
Your rights are broader than the warranty card
This is the part most people miss. Under Australian Consumer Law, consumer guarantees apply in addition to any manufacturer warranty, and the remedy is the responsibility of the business that sold you the product.
A guarantee is not bounded by the warranty period. The test the ACCC describes is whether the product lasted a reasonable time given its price and how it was described. A premium controller failing through ordinary use in a short period is exactly the scenario those guarantees exist for.

Hall-effect sticks use magnetic sensing and do not have the wearing contact that causes this specific failure. Controllers using them are increasingly available.

Clean it. Try calibration or deadzone adjustment. Contact the retailer and ask about a remedy under consumer guarantees. Price a repair. Only then buy a replacement, and if you do, check the stick technology.
