Refresh rate is how many times per second the display can update. More is better, until it is not, and the point where it stops mattering arrives earlier than marketing suggests.
The returns diminish, sharply
The jump from 60Hz to 120 or 144Hz is dramatic. Almost everyone notices it immediately, in everything — games, cursor movement, scrolling.
The jump from 144Hz to 240Hz is real but much smaller. From 240Hz upward, smaller again. This is a perceptual curve, not a linear one, and the price curve moves in the opposite direction.
Practical consequence: the first upgrade is worth prioritising and the later ones are for specific players with specific needs.
You must be able to feed it
This is the part that wastes money.
A 240Hz display showing 90 frames per second is delivering a 90Hz experience. The panel’s capability is irrelevant if the system cannot produce frames to fill it.
So the sequence is: work out the frame rate your system actually achieves in the games you play, then buy a display that matches it with modest headroom. Buying a 240Hz panel and a GPU that manages 100fps at your resolution is spending money in the wrong place — you would get more from the GPU.
This is also why resolution and refresh trade against each other. Higher resolution costs frames, which is exactly the thing high refresh needs.
VRR matters more than the ceiling
Variable refresh rate synchronises the display to the frame rate actually being produced, rather than forcing a fixed cadence.
Without it, a frame rate that fluctuates between 80 and 110fps produces tearing or stutter. With it, the fluctuation is largely invisible.
For most people, VRR support delivers more real improvement than a higher refresh ceiling, because most systems produce variable frame rates rather than a locked maximum. If you have to choose, choose VRR.
Motion clarity is a separate property
A high refresh rate does not automatically mean a clear image in motion. A panel can refresh quickly and still smear, because pixel response and persistence are separate characteristics.
VESA maintains the ClearMR programme specifically to describe motion clarity performance, which exists because refresh rate alone was not telling buyers what they needed to know.
The practical version: refresh rate is how often the image updates; motion clarity is how clean each update looks. A 240Hz panel with poor response can look worse in motion than a 144Hz panel with good response. We cover this separately.
Who genuinely benefits from very high refresh
- Competitive shooter players at high frame rates, where reaction time and target tracking are the whole game.
- Players who already consistently exceed 144fps in the games they play.
Who does not
- Anyone playing at 60 to 100fps. The panel is waiting.
- Single-player and visually-driven play, where resolution, contrast and HDR deliver more.
- Console players, where output is typically capped well below high-refresh territory. Check what your console actually outputs before buying for it.
The Australian consideration
Display pricing carries a local premium, so buying capability you cannot feed is a more expensive mistake here than in larger markets.
If you are choosing between a higher refresh ceiling and a better panel at a lower refresh, the second is usually the better purchase — and the difference is more likely to be visible.
Consumer guarantees apply as with any purchase, and dead pixels or backlight defects within a reasonable period are an acceptable-quality matter against the retailer.
