This comparison gets framed as a fight and it is not one. These devices sell different things. One sells a library you cannot legally get anywhere else. The other plays a library you may already own. Most people who ask the question already know which they want and are looking for permission.
Here is how to decide properly.
The library question settles most of it
Nintendo’s first-party catalogue exists on Nintendo hardware. That is the whole argument, and no specification changes it. If the household plays Mario, Zelda, Pokémon, Splatoon or Smash, the Switch 2 is not competing with a handheld PC — it is the only option.
Conversely, if you already own a substantial Steam library, a Steam Deck lets you play games you have already bought. That is not a small point: for many buyers the effective cost of the device is offset by not repurchasing a catalogue.
Ask this first: list the five games you expect to play most in the next year. If three or more are Nintendo published, stop reading and buy the Switch 2.
Scale, and why it matters to you
Switch 2 reportedly reached around 20 million units within a year of launch. The entire tracked handheld gaming PC market was roughly 1.45–1.48 million units across 2024.
That gap is not trivia. Install base drives accessory availability, local retail stock, secondhand liquidity, repair options and how long shops keep carrying spare parts. A Switch 2 accessory will be on a shelf in a suburban shopping centre. A specific handheld PC dock may need to be ordered in.
If you value being able to walk into a store and buy a replacement charger on a Saturday, the mainstream device has a real advantage that never appears in a spec comparison.
Who is it actually for?
Buying for a child or a shared household. Switch 2, and it is not close. It is designed to be handed to someone, it survives being handed to someone, local multiplayer is a first-class feature, and parental controls are mature. A handheld PC is a computer, and someone will end up administering it.
Buying for yourself, you already have a Steam library, you tinker happily. Steam Deck. You are buying access to games you own with per-game tuning you will actually enjoy doing.
Buying for yourself, you want to stop tinkering. Genuinely consider the Switch 2 even if you are a PC gamer. The friction cost of a handheld PC is real and people underestimate it when the spec sheet is exciting.
Emulation and older libraries. This is a handheld PC strength, but it is also its own research problem — the best device for it is frequently not the most powerful one.
What the Switch 2 gives you technically
From Nintendo Australia: 256GB internal storage, with some consumed by the system, expandable via microSD Express. Joy-Con attach magnetically and add mouse controls. It plays both physical and digital Switch games, with same-system, local wireless and online multiplayer.
Note the storage expansion standard specifically — microSD Express is not the same thing as the standard microSD cards you may already own, and assuming otherwise is a common and annoying mistake.
The Australian pricing reality
Nintendo Australia revised the Switch 2 RRP from AU$699.95 to AU$769.95, effective 1 September 2026, citing market conditions expected to persist over the medium to long term.
Two implications:
- Any AU comparison written before September 2026 is now wrong. Check the date on anything quoting a price.
- This is unlikely to reverse soon. Nintendo framed it as a medium-to-long-term adjustment, not a temporary move. Waiting for a return to the old RRP is not a strategy.

What happens when it breaks
Worth thinking about before you buy, especially at these prices.
Under the Australian Consumer Law, consumer guarantees apply automatically and sit above any manufacturer warranty — goods must be of acceptable quality and fit for purpose. Those rights are far easier to exercise against an Australian retailer than an offshore seller or a grey importer.
For a mainstream console with a large local install base, the repair and replacement path is well-trodden. For a niche imported handheld, it may not be. Price that in.
The short version
- Nintendo library in the household → Switch 2. Done.
- Existing Steam library, and you enjoy tuning → Steam Deck.
- Buying for a child or a shared space → Switch 2.
- You want to play, not administer → Switch 2, even if that feels like the wrong answer for a PC gamer.
- Emulation or older catalogues → handheld PC, but research the specific device properly.
