This is the decision people get wrong most often, and it is the cheapest one to get right — it costs nothing to think about properly before you buy.
What you are actually choosing between
SteamOS is a purpose-built games console operating system. It boots into a controller-driven interface, per-game settings stick, and suspend and resume behave the way they do on a console.
Windows is a desktop operating system running on a 7-inch screen. It runs essentially every PC game, every launcher and every mod tool. It also expects a mouse, produces desktop notifications, and needs maintaining.
Neither is better. They fail in opposite directions.
The hard wall: anti-cheat
This is the one genuinely non-negotiable factor, and it is worth checking before anything else.
SteamOS runs Windows games through a translation layer. Valve’s own developer documentation states that user-space anti-cheat components can typically run in that environment, while kernel-space solutions are not currently supported. Valve also notes that BattlEye is supported but requires a per-title configuration step by the developer.
In practice: some competitive multiplayer titles simply will not launch on SteamOS, and no amount of tinkering fixes it. That is an architectural boundary, not a bug awaiting a patch.
So the first question is not which handheld. It is: does a game I play weekly use kernel-level anti-cheat? If yes, you are buying a Windows handheld and the rest of this article is a formality.
How Valve labels compatibility
Valve publishes a compatibility rating with four states: Verified (works with controller and default settings), Playable (works but needs adjustment), Unsupported (known issues preventing proper play) and Unknown (not yet tested).
That system is genuinely useful and worth checking against your own library before purchase. Two honest caveats: “Playable” covers a wide range from “change one setting” to “you will fight this”, and “Unknown” is common for smaller titles rather than a warning.
What SteamOS gets you
- Lower friction. Pick a profile, it persists, you play.
- Better suspend and resume. Close the lid, come back, continue. This matters more in daily use than any benchmark.
- Less power spent on the OS. A console-shaped system does less in the background.
What Windows gets you
- Everything runs, including Game Pass, every storefront, mods and anti-cheat multiplayer.
- No translation layer to go wrong when a game updates.
- Freedom to install anything, including emulation front ends and capture tools.
The cost is real: driver updates, vendor software layers, a desktop that was never designed for the screen, and the ongoing maintenance of a PC you carry.
How to decide in four questions
- Does a game you play weekly use kernel-level anti-cheat? → Windows handheld. Decision over.
- Do you need Game Pass or a non-Steam launcher as a primary source? → Windows.
- Is most of your library already on Steam, and do you want to stop administering computers? → SteamOS.
- Are you buying this to tinker, or to play? Answer honestly. People who enjoy tinkering are happy on Windows. People who want a console are not.
What this article does not tell you
We have not measured either platform’s performance or battery life ourselves. The efficiency difference is widely reported but it is not our measurement, and we are not going to present it as one.
When we have a handheld and a published protocol, per-title results at fixed wattage targets will appear here as Tier B evidence. Until then, treat this as a framework for the decision, not a performance comparison.
