The single most common question from Minecraft players is: “Can my friend on Xbox play with me on Switch?” The answer depends entirely on which edition of Minecraft you own. Bedrock Edition says yes. Java Edition says no. This distinction costs players thousands of dollars in purchased games, platforms and subscriptions annually. Here is how to set up cross-platform play correctly, and why the Java-versus-Bedrock confusion happens.
The core rule: Bedrock Edition crossplay works, Java Edition does not
Minecraft: Bedrock Edition supports cross-platform multiplayer on Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PC (Windows 10 and 11), PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and mobile (iOS and Android). Minecraft: Java Edition does not. According to Minecraft’s own documentation, Java Edition is a separate multiplayer ecosystem. A player on Java Edition running on Windows cannot play with a friend on Bedrock Edition, even though both are on the same PC. This is the distinction players most often miss, and it is why a friend group can plan a session only to find one player locked out.
Java Edition runs only on Windows, Mac and Linux, supports no controller input natively, and offers no cross-device play. If that describes your setup, you cannot join Bedrock worlds. If you own only Java Edition, your friend group on console or mobile simply cannot include you.
How to link a Microsoft account for cross-platform play
Bedrock cross-platform play requires a Microsoft account. On Xbox Series X|S, this is your Xbox Live account. On Nintendo Switch, you must explicitly link a Microsoft account in your game settings before you can play online multiplayer or join a friend’s world. On PC and mobile, Minecraft logs you in via your Microsoft account when you launch the game.
To link your Microsoft account on Nintendo Switch, open Minecraft, select Settings, then Account, and follow the prompt to sign in with or create a Microsoft account. The same account must be used across all devices where you plan to play together. Once linked, you are recognisable to friends as the same player across platforms.
Console and Switch online subscriptions (Xbox Live Gold, PlayStation Plus, Nintendo Switch Online) are separate from the Microsoft account and may be required for online play depending on your platform.
How to invite cross-platform friends
Once accounts are linked, inviting a friend is straightforward. Add the friend using their Microsoft account gamertag—the username they registered with Microsoft, not their device-specific username. In Bedrock Edition, open your world, select the player you want to invite from your friends list, and send an invite. They can join from any Bedrock device. When they join, they appear with their account-linked gamertag, not their Switch name or Xbox name.
Friends who join your world do not need to own Realms themselves; one player’s subscription provides the persistent hosting for everyone invited.
Realms: persistent worlds that stay online
Minecraft Realms for Bedrock Edition is a cloud-hosted subscription service that keeps a Minecraft world running on Mojang’s servers at all times. When you create a Realm, your world persists whether you are online or not. Invited friends can log in and play anytime, across platforms, and progress is saved. According to Minecraft’s official documentation, invited friends can play on your Realm without purchasing a subscription—only the owner pays.
A Realm subscription includes three persistent-world slots, letting you run multiple worlds simultaneously. A 30-day free trial is available so players can test the service before committing. Realms is the most straightforward way to maintain a shared world that multiple players can access from Xbox, Switch, PC and mobile without requiring one player to stay online as host.
The Java Edition footnote
If your friend group contains even one Java Edition player, you cannot all play together in a single world. A Java Edition player must either purchase and download Bedrock Edition (available on Windows 10/11) or the group must split into separate sessions. On PC, Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition is available as a bundled purchase, giving access to both versions and sidestepping this decision.
