Minecraft on PC requires both keyboard and mouse working together. Unlike console versions with unified controller schemes, PC Minecraft splits input across your keyboard (for movement and most actions) and your mouse (for aiming and clicking). Learning the default hotkeys is your first step to playing confidently.
Movement and camera control
The default setup mirrors first-person games:
WASD: Press W to move forward, S to move backward, A to strafe left (move sideways), and D to strafe right. These keys must be held to keep moving; releasing stops you.
Mouse movement: Move your mouse to look around and aim the camera. Moving the mouse left and right rotates your view horizontally; moving it up and down tilts your view vertically. The crosshair in the centre of the screen follows your camera and shows where your actions will occur.
Space (Spacebar): Jump. Press Space to leap upward. In Survival mode, you use jumping to climb small blocks and cross gaps. In Creative mode, tap Space once to levitate into the air, then hold Space to fly upward. Press Space again to descend.
Shift (Left Shift): Sneak or fly downward. Hold Shift while standing near an edge to crouch and hang from blocks without falling. While flying in Creative mode, hold Shift to descend.
Ctrl (Control/Ctrl key): Sprint. Hold Ctrl while moving forward (W) to run faster, but sprinting drains your hunger meter in Survival mode. Release Ctrl to return to normal speed.
Mouse actions
Your mouse performs two core actions:
Left Mouse Button (Attack/Destroy): Aim the crosshair at a block or creature and hold the left mouse button. After a short delay, the block breaks or the creature takes damage. In Creative mode, left click destroys blocks instantly. If you are holding a tool, attacking speed depends on the tool type—a pickaxe breaks stone fast but wood slowly.
Right Mouse Button (Place/Use): Aim at a block or interactive object and click the right mouse button. If you are holding a placeable block (dirt, stone, wood, etc.), right click places it. If you aim at an interactive object—a chest, crafting table, door, button or lever—right click opens or activates it.
Middle Mouse Button (Creative mode only): Click the mouse wheel to select the block type you are looking at and add it to your inventory instantly. This works only in Creative mode.
Mouse Wheel Scroll: Scroll the wheel to cycle through your hotbar (the nine inventory slots shown at the bottom of the screen). Scrolling up selects the next slot to the right; scrolling down selects the slot to the left.
Inventory and item management
These hotkeys manage your items and inventory screen:
E: Open and close your inventory. The inventory screen shows all your collected items in a grid. You can drag items between slots, craft items if you have the right materials in a crafting grid, and equip armour. Press E again to close the inventory and resume playing.
Number keys 1 through 9: Hotbar slots. Press 1 to select the first hotbar slot (far left), 2 for the second, up to 9 for the ninth slot (far right). The selected item appears in your hand. This is faster than using the mouse wheel for frequent item switches.
Q: Drop the selected item. Press Q once to drop one copy of the item on the ground. Hold Q for a longer drop (some servers and maps use long-press differently, so expect variation). You can pick the item back up by walking over it.
F (Java Edition only): Swap items between your hands. If you are holding something in your main hand and have an item in your off-hand (usually a shield), press F to swap which hand is active. Bedrock Edition does not have this hotkey; use the inventory screen instead.
Combat and interaction
Left Mouse Button (held): Attack mode. Hold left click on a creature or player to damage them repeatedly. The rate depends on your weapon.
Right Mouse Button (held, if applicable): If you are holding a bow, hold right click to draw the bowstring back. Release to fire. Other tools and weapons may have right-click effects depending on the item.
F or Shift (variable): Block with a shield. If you have a shield equipped, press F (Java) to raise it, or hold Shift while holding a shield in some situations.
Chat and communication
T: Open the chat window. Type a message and press Enter to send it to other players on a multiplayer server. If you are in a single-player world, chat is disabled. Press T again or press Esc to close the chat without sending.
Enter: Send a chat message after you have opened chat with T.
Esc (Escape): Pause the game (single-player) or close any open screen (chat, inventory, pause menu). Press Esc in a multiplayer server to open the pause menu without pausing the game for others.
Creative and special commands
Tab: Display the player list in multiplayer mode, showing the usernames of all players on the server.
F3 (Java Edition): Open the debug screen, showing your coordinates, frame rate, and other technical information. Hold F3 and press a letter key for additional data overlays (F3+G shows chunk boundaries, F3+H shows item tooltips, etc.). Press F3 again to close. Bedrock Edition does not have a debug screen.
F11 (Windows): Toggle fullscreen mode. The game expands to fill your entire monitor, hiding the taskbar and window borders.
Command line (/): In-game commands. Type a forward slash ( / ) in chat to enter command mode (single-player Survival, Creative, or multiplayer servers with command permissions). Commands vary widely—for example, /give player item gives an item, /tp player coordinates teleports instantly. Commands are not beginner-friendly; ignore them unless you are experimenting on a private world.
Customizing controls
Every hotkey is customizable. Open the game menu (Esc or Pause) and select Settings, then Controls (or Keybinds on some versions). The menu shows all bound keys and lets you click any one to rebind it to a different key. This is useful if your keyboard layout is different, if you prefer a different hand position, or if you use an exotic input device.
Performance tips for keyboard and mouse play
- Mouse sensitivity: If your mouse movement feels too sensitive or sluggish, adjust the mouse sensitivity slider in Settings > Controls. Lower values make the mouse slower and more precise; higher values make it faster. Find a sensitivity where you can flick to targets quickly but still aim accurately at blocks.
- Key repeat: If holding WASD feels unresponsive, check your operating system’s key repeat delay and rate settings. Minecraft responds fastest with a short delay and high repeat rate.
- Crosshair: The white crosshair in the centre of the screen is your aiming reference. Keep your eyes on it when combat or precise building matters.
