Fortnite’s cross-progression system lets you maintain a single progress file across PC, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and mobile without losing skins, V-Bucks, Battle Pass progress or your friends list. The key is linking all your platform accounts to one Epic Games account. Here’s how to set it up and troubleshoot the most common problem: progress that doesn’t appear on a new platform.
What cross-progression does
When you link your platform accounts—Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, Nintendo, Steam—to the same Epic Games account, everything tied to that Epic account travels with you. Your cosmetics, V-Bucks balance, Battle Pass tier, Locker loadouts and friends are all accessible from any linked platform. Crossplay (playing with friends on different platforms) works independently of cross-progression, but both require the same Epic account to be linked to each platform you use.
Step 1: Identify your main progress account
Before you link anything, sign in to epicgames.com on a web browser and check which platform account is currently connected to your Epic Games account. The account you want to use as your hub must be the one that already has your Fortnite progress, cosmetics and V-Bucks balance. Do not unlink an account to test it; unlinking resets that console’s progress to level 1 and is difficult to reverse.
Step 2: Link a new platform account
Once you are logged into epicgames.com with the correct Epic account:
- Go to your Account settings and select Connections
- Scroll to the platform you want to link (PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, Steam, etc.)
- Click the Connect button next to that platform
- Sign in with your console or platform account when prompted
- Authorise the connection
- Return to the Connections page and verify the link shows as active
Remember: you can only link one account of each type. If your console account is already linked to a different Epic account, you will need to unlink it from that account first—but this causes permanent progress loss on that console until you link it to a new Epic account.
Step 3: Launch Fortnite and verify sync
After linking:
- Launch Fortnite on the new platform
- Wait for your Locker to load fully (30 seconds to 1 minute)
- Check your Battle Pass tier, cosmetics, V-Bucks balance and friends list
- Do not buy anything until you confirm everything is there
If your progress appears instantly, cross-progression is working. If the Locker loads as empty, see “Troubleshooting” below.
Step 4: Enable crossplay on console (optional)
Crossplay is opt-in on PlayStation and Xbox. If you want to play with friends on other platforms:
On PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S:
- Launch Fortnite
- Go to Settings > Game
- Toggle Allow Cross Platform Play to On
- Return to the lobby
You can also manage crossplay through your console’s system settings under parental controls if you have a restricted account.
On Nintendo Switch: Crossplay is enabled by default when you link your Epic account. Check Settings > Game if you want to disable it.
Troubleshooting: progress is not appearing
This is the most common issue. The Locker loads empty or shows level 1. Here’s what to check:
First, confirm you signed in to the correct Epic account. Sign out of Fortnite, go to epicgames.com, and verify which platform account it says is connected. Note down the Epic account name. Now sign back into Fortnite on the console and check the Epic account name shown in Settings > Account. If they don’t match, you are logged into the wrong Epic account on that console.
Second, check that the console account is linked to your main Epic account. Go back to epicgames.com, navigate to Connections, and verify the platform (PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo) shows as connected. If it says “Connect” instead of “Connected,” the link did not complete. Repeat Step 2.
Third, wait for the game to fully sync. Close Fortnite completely, restart the console, relaunch Fortnite and wait 2–3 minutes for the Locker to populate. Network delays can slow the sync.
Fourth, check for console-level account restrictions. On Xbox and PlayStation, parental controls set at the console level can prevent account linking or crossplay. If you have a restricted account, check your console’s family settings. Under 13 years old accounts on Epic Games also have restrictions (chat, friend requests and spending are off by default). A parent or guardian must enable these features individually if needed.
If none of these steps work, your console account may have been linked to a different Epic account previously and needs unlinking first. This process causes permanent progress loss on that console, so contact Epic Games support (support.epicgames.com) for assistance before unlinking.
Platform-specific notes
PC (Windows/Mac): No special setup needed. Link your Steam account or Epic Games launcher account and launch from either platform. Both clients access the same progress.
Xbox Series X|S: One Xbox Live account per Epic Games account. Crossplay is controlled from Settings > Game. Game Pass does not restrict cross-progression.
PlayStation 5: One PlayStation Network account per Epic Games account. You must link your PSN ID on epicgames.com; the link does not happen automatically through the console. Ensure your PSN account is set to a region that matches your Epic account’s region for fastest sync.
Nintendo Switch: One Nintendo account per Epic Games account. Cross-progression works on handheld and docked modes. Crossplay is enabled by default.
Mobile (iOS/Android): Available where the game is distributed (primarily Android). Links to your existing Epic account automatically if you sign in with that Epic account credentials.
Important: Progress created on two different Epic Games accounts cannot be merged. If you have Fortnite progress on two separate Epic accounts, you must choose which one to keep as your main account; the other’s progress cannot be recovered or transferred.
