RuneScape: Dragonwilds – General Velgar Boss Fight Guide

Most Velgar wipes happen before his real attacks even land - to poison damage from skipping antipoison. Get preparation right and the fight itself is a readiness check, not a mystery.

General Velgar, fought at Velgar’s Rise as the climax of the Dragon Slayer quest (see our full quest walkthrough for everything leading up to this fight), is described by games.gg’s boss coverage as a readiness check for Iron-era equipment and poison management as much as a test of raw combat skill. Most first-attempt wipes, per that same sourcing, come from poison damage rather than Velgar’s actual attacks.

What Velgar is resistant and immune to

Per the official Dragonwilds wiki, Velgar has no general elemental resistance or weakness to exploit — but he does carry two specific immunities worth knowing before you prepare a loadout. He is immune to Burning, so a fire/burn-focused setup wastes its main damage-over-time effect on him entirely. He is also immune to Poison, meaning bringing weapon poison to this specific fight accomplishes nothing — a detail worth knowing in advance rather than discovering mid-fight, since it means his poison damage to you is entirely one-directional. The wiki recommends water, air and earth rune damage as the practical damage approach given these immunities.

Why poison management decides this fight before it even starts

This is the single most important preparation note from the sourced guides: players who skip antipoison, or who show up with already-damaged gear, wipe quickly and often do not immediately understand why. Get poison preparation right, and per games.gg’s framing, Velgar falls cleanly. Skip it, and you will burn through your healing food dealing with poison damage before his more dangerous attacks even come into play. Bring antipoison specifically for this fight — treat it as mandatory rather than optional.

Velgar’s three main attacks

Poison Cone — Velgar exhales a blight cone directly in front of him. With antipoison active, this becomes a manageable positioning problem you sidestep. Without it, per the sourced guide, this attack alone can end the fight. The counter is simple: sidestep the cone rather than trying to tank it.

Ground Slam & Spikes — Velgar slams the ground, stunning anyone caught without blocking or evading, then spikes erupt and chase outward from the impact point. Tempest Shield and a clean evade are the documented counters. Importantly, the spike count increases after each of Velgar’s flight phases, meaning this attack gets progressively more dangerous to misjudge as the fight goes on rather than staying at a constant difficulty.

Flight Phase — When Velgar takes to the air and lands on the tower, the counter is straightforward: repeatedly attack him with a bow while he is perched there. This is described as a comparatively low-risk damage window compared to his ground-based attacks, provided you have a ranged option ready.

Attack progression: it gets harder, not random

Per the official wiki, Velgar repeatedly cycles through the same small set of attacks for the entire fight, but they progressively strengthen as his HP drops — the Ground Slam’s spike count specifically increases after each flight phase. This means the fight’s difficulty curve is predictable rather than random: you should expect later phases to punish sloppy positioning harder than earlier ones did, and plan your resource usage (healing food, cooldowns) with that escalation in mind rather than assuming a flat difficulty throughout.

Preparation checklist

  • Bring antipoison. This is the single highest-impact preparation step in this entire fight — skipping it is the most common cause of an early wipe.
  • Don’t bring weapon poison. Velgar is immune to it; it does nothing here.
  • Favour water, air and earth rune damage, and skip fire/burn-focused setups since he is immune to Burning.
  • Have a ranged option ready for the Flight Phase — this is your safest, most reliable damage window in the fight.
  • Expect Ground Slam’s spikes to escalate after each flight phase — do not assume the attack you dodged easily early on stays that easy later.
