PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS beginner’s guide — game loop, loot, and zone mechanics

PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS distils battle royale fundamentals into a repeating cycle: land, loot, and outrun the shrinking safe zone. Here is how each phase works and what new players need to know to survive a full match.

A standard PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS match follows a predictable sequence: you and 99 other players drop onto a map, search for weapons and equipment, and fight to be the last survivor. The catch is a shrinking play area that forces engagements as the match narrows. This guide walks through each phase and the mechanics that govern it, so you can understand what to expect in your first matches.

The Match Loop: Land, Loot, Survive

Every match follows the same structure. A maximum of 100 players board a plane and depart over the map. Before the plane reaches its destination, you can open the map and pick a landing spot. Once you jump and parachute to the ground, you have two immediate tasks: find weapons and protective gear, then navigate the shrinking safe zone without taking damage. The last player standing wins the match.

Where to Land: Contested vs. Safe

Your landing decision shapes your first minutes. According to PUBG’s official guidance, areas farther from the plane’s flight path tend to be safer but offer less loot. Well-known locations such as Pochinki on the Erangel map sit on or near the plane’s path, which means more players land there, but the buildings hold better-quality equipment.

When descending, avoid landing directly on rooftops; you will be exposed to players who landed before you. Similarly, descending too quickly forces your character to roll on impact, delaying your ability to move and arm yourself. A controlled, deliberate descent gives you time to react if you encounter another player immediately upon landing.

Loot Priority: Weapon First, Then Gear

Your first priority after landing is a weapon—any weapon. Searching for the best-quality gun while unarmed leaves you defenceless. Once you have a firearm, prioritise protective gear: a vest and helmet reduce incoming bullet damage. Accept the first level of armour you find; upgrading to higher-level protection can wait.

After securing a weapon and basic armour, gather healing items and ammunition. A basic inventory might include bandages (for small health recovery), a First Aid Kit (for larger recovery), and enough ammunition for your primary weapon.

For beginners, assault rifles offer reliable mid-range damage and firing rate, making them forgiving compared to other weapon classes. Avoid chasing supply drops marked by red smoke unless you have clear surroundings; the visible smoke attracts multiple players, and arriving first often means arriving to gunfire.

The Blue Zone: Shrinking Play Area

The core tension of a PUBG match comes from a shrinking safe zone called the Blue Zone. Before the match begins, the map displays the initial safe zone as a white circle. All players outside this zone take damage over time. The zone shrinks through multiple phases during a match, compressing survivors closer together and forcing movement whether you are ready or not.

PUBG’s recent zone revamp changed how damage scales. Previously, damage depended on how far you were from safety. Now, damage is based on how long you stay in the blue zone. This encourages faster rotations to the next safe area rather than penalising players who are slightly outside the boundary.

Each shrink phase begins with a warning period, giving players time to prepare for movement. When the shrinking begins, the blue zone contracts steadily, and players caught in it lose health until they re-enter the white safe circle. Late-game phases shrink faster and deal more damage, intensifying end-game encounters.

Healing and Recovery Items

Three primary healing items restore your health during a match:

Bandages are common pickups that restore a small amount of health and can be used in succession until you reach 75% health.

First Aid Kits take approximately 6 seconds to use and restore health up to 75%.

Med Kits take about 8 seconds to use and restore your health to full, but are rare drops.

Carry at least two healing items in your backpack, along with space for ammunition. Medical vending machines on the map also dispense bandages and first aid kits if you need resupply.

Ranked Mode vs. Casual: Structure and Requirements

PUBG offers separate ranked and casual matchmaking. Casual matches are open to all players and consist of standard battle royale gameplay with up to 100 players.

Ranked mode limits matches to 64 seasoned opponents and enforces a competitive ruleset focused on loot acquisition and pacing. To enter Ranked mode, you must first reach Survival Mastery Level 80, a progression milestone earned by playing matches. As of Season 43 (September 2026), Ranked uses an eight-tier system — Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Crystal, Diamond, Master and Survivor — with four divisions within each tier below Survivor. Crystal and Survivor were added in a Season 36 ranked revamp; Survivor is a leaderboard-based top title rather than a standard division, and its Tier Protection does not apply. Your rank changes based on your match performance: placement, survival time, and eliminations earn or lose Rank Points.

Casual play has no such restrictions, making it the natural starting point for new players. Once you reach Mastery Level 80, you can try Ranked if you prefer competitive structure and matchmaking against experienced opponents.

Getting Started: First Match Fundamentals

Before your first match, PUBG offers beginner training through Camp Jackal, a tutorial area where you can practise movement, looting, and combat without competition.

In your opening matches, expect to encounter players in high-density landing zones and to die quickly if you drop near others. This is normal. Survival length, not kills, determines learning pace. Land somewhere quieter, spend time looting and understanding how weapons handle, and focus on reaching the late game without engaging other players—that teaches positioning and zone prediction better than early combat.

Listen carefully to footsteps and gunshots. Audio cues reveal whether enemies are nearby and from which direction, a critical skill in any battle royale.
