Valve published a patch for Counter-Strike 2 in mid-September 2026 that introduced the IEM Cologne 2026 Major tournament hub, refined how C4 explosions interact with the environment, and added spectator-focused display controls. Here is what each change does and who it affects.
IEM Cologne 2026 Major: Tournament Hub and Souvenir Charms
The patch opened the IEM Cologne 2026 Major Shop, where players can purchase tournament items and participate in the Pick’Em Challenge. This is Valve’s way of letting the community support the esports event while earning cosmetic rewards.
Highlight Souvenir Charms are new collectible items featured in the Major Shop. Each charm displays a highlight moment from one of the six stages of the Cologne 2026 Major tournament. These are cosmetic items—they do not affect gameplay—and are available for purchase only during the tournament.
Major Shop availability: The Cologne 2026 Major Shop items were available for purchase until September 29, 2026. Sticker prices within the shop now display the lowest and highest price from the previous seven days, giving collectors a sense of market price history.
If you are interested in esports and want to support the teams competing at Cologne, the Major Shop is the primary in-game way to do so. Purchases contribute to the tournament prize pool.
C4 Explosion Changes: Damage and Physics
The patch refined how the bomb’s C4 explosive behaves after detonation. These changes are technical and matter most to competitive players who rely on precise blast radius knowledge.
Map-wide minimum damage removed: Previously, C4 explosions dealt a minimum of one point of damage to players anywhere on the map, even at extreme distances. This is no longer the case. Damage now falls off properly with distance, meaning players far from the blast site receive no damage. This makes the C4 explosion more predictable and removes a rare edge case where a distant player could be killed by an explosion they could not see or hear clearly.
Boundary damage recalculation: Valve fixed a case where C4 damage was calculated incorrectly near the edges of different map areas. For example, if a player was standing at the boundary between two connected areas (such as a doorway), the game previously used inconsistent logic to determine damage. This is now corrected so that the damage calculation is consistent regardless of where a player stands relative to map geometry.
Increased force on dropped weapons: After a C4 explosion, dropped weapons (weapons on the ground) now receive more force from the blast. This means weapons are knocked farther away from the explosion site, making them slightly harder to retrieve quickly after the bomb detonates. This is a minor change that affects post-round weapon recovery.
These changes make the C4 explosion mechanic more internally consistent. They do not change how much damage the bomb deals at close range (it is still lethal near the blast site), but they remove exploitable edge cases and make the physics more predictable for both sides.
Spectator Updates: Flashbang Control
The patch introduced controls for spectators (players watching a match rather than playing in it).
Flashbang opacity control: Spectators can now adjust how opaque a flashbang effect appears on their screen. This is controlled by the console command r_spectator_flashbang_opacity. Spectators who find the white flash distracting or hard on their eyes can reduce the opacity, making the effect less intense while still seeing it.
Flashbang rendering order: Flashbangs now render underneath the on-screen HUD (the scoreboard, radar, and player names). This means the bright white flashbang flash does not obscure the HUD, making it easier for spectators to track the match state even during a flash.
These changes improve the spectator experience. Remote spectators (watching from the server) can now customise their view, and the HUD remains readable during flashbang effects.
Who This Patch Affects
- Esports fans: The Cologne Major Shop gives you a new way to support teams and earn tournament cosmetics.
- Competitive players: The C4 changes make explosion damage and physics more predictable. If you play at a high level, you may notice that weapon recovery after bomb detonations is slightly different.
- Spectators and casters: Flashbang controls let you adjust your viewing experience to reduce visual distraction.
- Casual players: The changes have minimal impact on regular gameplay. The C4 adjustments are minor and mainly affect edge cases that rarely occur in normal play.
Next Steps
If you are following the Cologne 2026 Major, the in-game Major Shop is now closed as of September 29. If you missed it, tournament cosmetics are archived in your Steam inventory and may return in future majors.
