What shipped at launch
The 1.0 release arrived with the brand-new Scorned Wilderness update, concluding the Kuldra Saga opening narrative, alongside all content from the Umbral Sands expansion. This represents the largest region in the game to date and includes new gear such as Infinity Robes and Red Dragonhide equipment. The game is a co-operative survival spin-off, not a traditional RuneScape expansion: it supports one to four players in shared worlds, focuses on gathering, building and crafting with a skill progression system advancing from level 1 to 99, and is set on the forgotten continent of Ashenfall where dragons have awoken.
Early access impact and growth
The early access period, which began in April 2025, included three major expansions that substantially expanded the game’s scope. Fellhollow (December 2025) introduced the corrupted guardian dragon Imaru and Terrorbird riding mechanics. Dowdun Reach (March 2026) added a Zamorakian fortress with skill caps reaching 99. During the eighteen-month development cycle, the game map tripled in size, with three new regions added featuring bosses, gear, and skill-based challenges. Executive Producer Jesse America stated in Jagex’s launch announcement that “every update throughout Early Access has been shaped by player feedback, and we’re incredibly proud of what we’ve built together.”
Platforms and cross-play
Dragonwilds launched simultaneously on PC (Steam and Epic Games Store), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. According to RuneScape’s official announcement, the game supports full crossplay, meaning players on any platform can team up together in the same world. Nintendo Switch 2 players can also use the Nintendo Game Chat feature to communicate with friends across different hardware during gameplay.
Subscription services and pricing
On Xbox, Dragonwilds arrived day one into Xbox Game Pass (Premium, Ultimate and PC Game Pass tiers), making it immediately available to subscribers without a separate purchase. On PlayStation, the game also launched day one into PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium memberships. On PC and Nintendo Switch 2, the game is available for separate purchase at $29.99 (launch promotional price $23.99). Physical standard and deluxe editions are scheduled to arrive in Q4 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
Cross-platform progression: a critical distinction
While crossplay is fully supported, cross-platform progression is not. Jagex confirmed in June 2026 that character progress does not carry over between platforms—a player cannot sync their inventory, skills or completion status from PC to console or vice versa. This means players must choose a platform and build their character there, though they can still team up with friends on other platforms for co-op sessions. However, Steam Cloud supports save transfers between PCs within the Steam ecosystem, and Xbox Play Anywhere enables continuity between Xbox and supported Windows PC versions using Xbox cloud saves.
Post-launch roadmap
Following the launch, Jagex has scheduled the “Luminance” update for December 2026. A more expansive 2027 roadmap will be announced at October’s RuneFest fan event. The launch also confirms the planned implementation of the Agility skill, Fight Caves and Nightmare Crucible challenge modes, and ongoing quality-of-life improvements.
Where to play
The game is available through multiple storefronts and subscription services. On Xbox, the quickest route is through Game Pass. On PC, it is available on Steam and Epic Games Store. PlayStation 5 players can access it via PlayStation Plus or purchase separately. Nintendo Switch 2 owners can buy it from the eShop or wishlist the game on their respective storefronts.
