Share Play not working is rarely a bug — Sony’s own support page lists a specific set of conditions, and any one of them being unmet is enough to grey the option out or block the visitor.
PlayStation Plus is required to start it
Sony’s guidance is direct: starting Share Play requires a PlayStation Plus membership. If the invited visitor is not also a PlayStation Plus member, the “Share Play with the Visitor” option specifically cannot be selected, even if the host has the membership.
Connection speed has a stated minimum
PlayStation’s own recommendation is a connection of at least 2Mbps for both people involved, for the feature to perform acceptably. A slower connection on either side is the kind of condition that can make Share Play technically start but perform poorly.
Only one visitor at a time
Share Play is limited to one visitor per session. It is not a group-viewing feature, regardless of how many friends are online at once.
Age rating and region can both block a visitor
Two separate conditions can stop a visitor from joining even when the connection and membership are fine: if the visitor’s account age is below the game’s PlayStation Store age rating, or if the game is not available in the visitor’s own country or region, Share Play access is blocked for that visitor specifically.
PS4 and PS5 players can Share Play together
Sony’s own support material confirms Share Play works across PS4 and PS5, including while chatting in a party, letting a PS5 player share access to a PS5 game with a friend still on PS4, and the reverse.
